About us
New Life Ministries began in January of 2008. Michelle Smith, a missionary from the USA works with both local and international volunteers to reach the people of Qolweni, the poorest of the poor. With a resolve to meet both the physical and spiritual needs of the people, a warehouse within the village has now become the place of worship for New Life Church and the New Life after-school programme. The community has graciously embraced New Life and lives are positively being changed on a daily basis.

South Africa is in many ways considered a developed country with a steady growing economy, yet there are many third-world characteristics that have affected a large percentage of the South African community. Presently, South Africa with a population of 47,850,700 has an average life expectancy of only 49 years. Thirty-four percent of the population live below $2 a day, with an unemployment rate that has reached 25.6%. The HIV/AIDS prevalence rate for South Africa is 11.4%, amounting to 5.5 million individuals with HIV/AIDS, the highest in the world.
Qolweni! Pronounced “cool-weenie”, the name Qolweni means, “Village on a Hill”. Qolweni is an informal settlement, with a population of roughly 12,000 individuals living in extreme poverty conditions. The lack of safe and potable water, electricity and sanitation facilities have exacerbated the poverty conditions for those living in Qolweni. Amidst all the hopelessness that poverty brings, there is an exciting new programme in Qolweni that has brought hope for the children and their families.
